On December 30, US President Joe Biden revealed a new $2.5 billion security assistance package for Ukraine, aimed at supporting the country’s defense efforts in the face of ongoing Russian aggression. The announcement, made during a statement from the White House, highlights the continued US commitment to aiding Ukraine’s military.

This latest package includes $1.25 billion in military equipment for Ukraine, alongside a $1.22 billion allocation under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI). These funds will provide Ukraine with immediate supplies, such as artillery, air defense systems, and other critical weapons, while also contributing to longer-term defense capabilities.

Since Russia’s escalation of its offensive in February 2022, the US has played a pivotal role in rallying international support for Ukraine. President Biden emphasized that the US is focused on rapidly delivering essential military equipment to the battlefield while also rebuilding its defense industrial base to ensure long-term assistance.

In addition to the immediate assistance, the US will continue to provide older equipment to Ukraine and work towards replenishing stockpiles with modern weaponry. The US Department of Defense is also in the process of delivering large quantities of artillery rounds, rockets, and armored vehicles to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities, particularly as it faces challenges in the winter months.

Earlier, on December 27, White House spokesperson John Kirby announced that the United States would provide Ukraine with a new $1.25 billion military aid package. The package will include air defense systems, ammunition, and artillery shells, aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s ability to counter missile attacks.

Kirby highlighted the importance of bolstering Ukraine’s air defense following recent missile strikes during the Christmas period, emphasizing the US commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense efforts. The official announcement is expected on December 30.
