The US Department of State has approved a possible $825 million Foreign Military Sale to Ukraine that includes 3,350 Extended Range Attack Munition (ERAM) missiles, the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) announced on August 28.
The package also covers 3,350 embedded GPS/Inertial Navigation Systems with anti-spoofing technology, missile containers, spare parts, software, mission planning equipment, and training.
US officials emphasized that the sale will not alter the overall military balance in the region but will significantly improve Ukraine’s ability to defend itself against Russian attacks.
Each ERAM missile has a range of 460 kilometers and carries a 225-kilogram fragmentation warhead. The system is designed to complicate Russian air defenses by forcing them to respond before Ukraine launches other long-range strikes.
Ukraine will finance the purchase with support from Denmark, the Netherlands, and Norway, along with US Foreign Military Financing. The contractors are listed as Zone 5 Technologies and CoAspire.
According to DSCA, the deal supports US foreign policy objectives by bolstering the security of a partner nation and enhancing regional stability in Europe as Ukraine continues to resist Russia’s full-scale invasion.
Earlier, it was reported that Ukraine had proposed a $100 billion purchase of American weapons—largely financed by European partners—as part of its effort to secure long-term US security guarantees ahead of potential peace talks with Russia. The proposal also included a $50 billion deal to expand drone production in cooperation with Ukrainian defense firms.
