The United States has expressed willingness to take control of Ukraine’s nuclear power plants as a potential measure to help end the ongoing war.

US Secretary of Energy Chris Wright stated in an interview with Fox News on March 20, that the US has the necessary technical expertise to manage these facilities without deploying military personnel to Ukraine.

“If this contributes to achieving peace, there is no issue—we can do it,” Wright said. However, he clarified that the US government has not officially discussed the matter.

The statement comes amid broader discussions about international involvement in Ukraine’s energy sector. On March 19, President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had a conversation in which Trump mentioned the potential role of the US in managing Ukrainian nuclear facilities.

According to White House Press Secretary Caroline Leavitt, Trump emphasized that American oversight could help secure Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

While the specific facilities under consideration remain unclear, Zelenskyy stated that his discussion with Trump focused on the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant, currently under Russian control. The US Department of Energy has not issued any official proposals regarding the management of Ukraine’s nuclear plants.

The potential for international oversight of Ukrainian nuclear facilities has been a recurring topic, particularly in light of concerns about the security of the Zaporizhzhia plant. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) recently passed a resolution calling for the immediate withdrawal of Russian forces and the return of the plant to Ukrainian control.
