The US Helsinki Commission is urging the United States to abandon its Cold War-era tactics used in relations with Russia and formally designate Moscow as a permanent threat to global security, shows a new report by the Helsinki Commission.

This was reported by The Hill on September 28.

The report states that Washington must reassess its approach to Russia, similar to how it has shifted its stance toward China in recent years, and re-allocate it’s resources accordingly.

A key priority of the report’s strategy is ensuring Ukraine’s victory in the war Russia started. Helsinki Commission calls for “massive” military and humanitarian aid to Kyiv as well as authorization for Ukraine’s Armed Forces to strike deep into Russian territory using Western weapons.

The Hill writes that these recommendations go beyond the current policies of President Joe Biden and do not comply with the stance of presidential candidate Donald Trump as well as his supporters in Congress, who advocates reducing spending on European security and direct negotiations between Ukraine and Russia.

At the same time, Joe Wilson, chairman of the Helsinki Commission and a Republican, does not believe in possibility of successful negotiations with Russian dictator Putin.

“No question to me that Donald Trump is going to see the insincerity of war criminal Putin. Putin is not anybody that you can reach an agreement with, that would be substantive, that would hold.” Wilson said.

The Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe (CSCE), also known as the U.S. Helsinki Commission, is an independent U.S. government agency created by Congress in 1975 to monitor and encourage compliance with the Helsinki Final Act and other Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) commitments.

Earlier, EU condemned Putin’s nuclear doctrine as “irresponsible and unacceptable”.
