On December 25, Ukraine's Ministry of Defense officially approved the domestically-produced ‘Shchedryk’ UAV for operational use within the Defense Forces.

The Shchedryk drone is capable of performing tasks in harsh weather conditions, including strong winds, frost, and heat. Additionally, the battery charge allows for extended periods of continuous operation.

“It is used for monitoring enemy activities on the battlefield. The Shchedryk operates effectively both during the day and at night,“ reads the Ministry’s press release.

The system consists of a control station and remotely piloted aircraft, which is equipped with quiet electric engines and has enhanced resistance to electronic warfare interference.

“The capabilities of the aircraft and its optical equipment allow it to operate from a difficult-to-reach altitude for most of the enemy's air defense fire systems," said Deputy Defense Minister Dmytro Klymenkov.

The drone’s name—‘Shchedryk’ ('little swallow') is derived from ‘shchedrivka’—Ukrainian ritual New Year songs—is one of the world’s most iconic carols, composed in 1914 by the Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych. Despite severe restrictions on the Ukrainian language in the early 20th century, Leontovych composed the lyrics of Shchedryk in Ukrainian.

In 1936, American composer Peter J. Wilhousky adapted it with English lyrics, transforming it into a Christmas classic Carol of the Bells.

Leontovych never saw his work’s global acclaim. In 1921, he was assassinated by the Bolshevik secret police in his village, likely for his ties to Ukrainian nationalism and cultural resistance. His masterpiece endures as a symbol of Ukraine’s resilience.

On December 18, Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense officially approved the domestically-produced CRAB-LS robotic ground transporter for use within the nation’s defense forces.
