The United States no longer intends to serve as a mediator in efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine. Instead, Washington says it is time for Kyiv and Moscow to present their own peace proposals.

The United States remains committed to supporting peace efforts in Ukraine but will reduce its direct role as a mediator, US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said during a press briefing on May 1.

“President Trump understands the importance of ending the war through diplomacy,” Bruce said. “But he also recognizes that there’s an entire world that needs attention.”

As a result, the US will shift its role in the negotiation process to end the war in Ukraine, Bruce said. She reiterated her recent remarks, as well as those of Secretary of State Marco Rubio, emphasizing that the United States will no longer act as a mediator in talks between Ukraine and Russia.

“We are not going to fly around the world at the drop of a hat to mediate meetings; that is now between the two parties [Ukraine and Russia], and now is the time that they need to present and develop concrete ideas about how this conflict is going to end,” Bruce stated.

At the same time, Bruce noted that the possibility of new US sanctions against Russia remains on the table. She emphasized that Washington is not lifting any of the previously imposed sanctions on Moscow.

On April 29, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed concern that Russia is “preparing something” in Belarus, possibly hiding behind the guise of military exercises.
