Yaroslava Mahuchikh's Historic High Jump Record Officially Ratified by World Athletics
The International Association of Athletics Federations, World Athletics, has officially ratified the world record of Ukrainian high jumper Yaroslava Mahuchikh.
This was reported on the World Athletics website.
The athlete set a new high jump world record back in July of this year during the Paris Diamond League. Then Mahuchikh confidently won the gold, taking a height of 203 cm, after which she decided to raise the bar and try to set a world record.
The previous record in this sport was set in 1987 by the Bulgarian athlete Stefka Kostadinova and was 2.09 meters. Yaroslava managed to reach a height of 2.10 meters on the first attempt.
After the ratification, Mahuchikh officially became the current holder of the world record, the only Ukrainian woman in athletics with the active best result in history. The last time among Ukrainians this title was held by Nataliia Dobrynska, in the women's pentathlon, before the achievement was surpassed in 2023 by the Belgian Nafissatou Thiam.
“Ukraine’s Mahuchikh improved one of the longest-standing world records on the books when she cleared 2.10m at the Meeting de Paris, part of the Wanda Diamond League, on 7 July,” said the statement of World Athletics.
Mahuchikh has cemented her place in sporting history by winning gold at the Paris 2024 Olympics. In her performance on August 4, Mahuchikh cleared a height of 2.04 meters.
