Zelenskyy and Navalny Are Bookmakers Bet for the Upcoming Nobel Peace Prize, Reuters Reports
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny are among the bookmakers’ favourites for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize, Reuters reported on October 3.
With 2024 marking the third year of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, as well as the recent escalation of the Israel-Hamas war and other conflicts, the Nobel committee may prioritize humanitarian actors who alleviate civilian suffering.
The prize results will be announced on October 11 in Norway. While bookmakers have listed Zelenskyy as a leading contender, his chances are uncertain due to his role as the leader of a nation currently at war.
Another favourite, Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, who passed away in an Arctic penal colony in February, is ineligible to receive the award posthumously.
Earlier this year, Zelenskyy was recognized for his contributions to humanity with the Golden Plate Award from the American Academy of Achievement.
