Shortly after Donald Trump appeared at a White House press conference with Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. on May 12, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy released a statement welcoming Trump’s call for a complete and unconditional 30-day ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.

“I just heard President Trump’s statement. Very important words,” Zelenskyy said. “I supported Donald Trump with the idea of a complete and unconditional ceasefire—long enough to provide a basis for diplomacy. And we want that, we are ready to provide silence from our side.”

Zelenskyy also endorsed Trump’s proposal for direct talks with Putin and reiterated his readiness to meet with the Russian leader.

“I supported President Trump with the idea of direct talks with Putin. I have said openly that I am ready to meet. I will be in Turkey. I hope that the Russians will not avoid this meeting,” Zelenskyy stated.

He further extended an invitation to Trump to participate in the proposed diplomatic meeting, expected to be held in Türkiye under the auspices of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

“All of us in Ukraine would like President Trump to be there with us—at this meeting in Turkey. This is the right idea. We can change a lot. President Erdogan can really host a meeting at the highest level. Thank you to everyone who is helping,” Zelenskyy said.

The statement follows a joint US-EU push for a 30-day ceasefire, with several European leaders urging Russia to agree to the proposal by the end of May 12.
