Macron Urges Putin to Accept Ceasefire by Monday Evening or Face More Sanctions

French President Emmanuel Macron has announced he will resume talks with his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, and European colleagues, as the joint US-EU proposal for a 30-day unconditional ceasefire remains valid only until Monday evening. This was reported by RFI on May 12, citing Le Figaro.
“I will speak with Volodymyr Zelenskyy and my European counterparts today. The parameters have been set. Everything is clear,” Macron told reporters during a visit to the EssilorLuxottica facility in Wissous, Essonne, on May 12.
“We all need to act with reason now. Either Russia is serious and wants peace, or it isn’t, and we must impose further sanctions,” Macron added.
At the same time, German government spokesperson Stefan Kornelius has also warned that Putin must respond to the proposed ceasefire in Ukraine by the end of May 12.

“The clock is ticking—we still have 12 hours left in the day,” Kornelius reportedly said, noting that Berlin is working closely with European partners on a new package of sanctions.
In response, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov rejected Western demands that Russia agree to a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine, citing the proposal’s tone.
“Such ultimatums are unacceptable to Russia. This kind of language doesn’t work. You can’t speak to Russia that way,” Peskov said during a press briefing.
On May 10, during the coalition of the willing summit in Kyiv, world leaders agreed to use the threat of new sanctions as leverage to compel Russia to accept a ceasefire. That same day, US President Donald Trump reportedly expressed support for a 30-day ceasefire set to begin on May 12, provided Russia agrees to the terms.
