EU and US Threaten New Sanctions if Russia Rejects 30-Day Ceasefire Deal

At the “coalition of the willing” summit in Kyiv, an agreement was reached to use the threat of new sanctions as a tool to pressure Russia into agreeing to a ceasefire.
This was reported by a UNITED24 Media correspondent, citing a joint press conference on May 10.
Earlier, during the same day, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, along with French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, held phone conversations with US President Donald Trump before and after the “coalition of the willing” meeting, where they pushed for a ceasefire.
Trump has reportedly agreed to support the 30-day ceasefire, which would start on May 12, if Russia agrees.

According to the allies, if Russia agrees to a ceasefire and there are violations, there will be a coordinated response from the EU and the US, including sanctions.
“If Russia rejects a full and unconditional ceasefire, sanctions will be imposed, including stronger sanctions against its energy sector and banking system,” Zelenskyy announced.
According to Macron, if Russia violates an agreed-upon ceasefire, there will be a coordinated response from the EU and US, including sanctions.
“In the event of a breach, we have agreed that massive sanctions will follow. Preparations for them are already underway and are being coordinated between the Americans and Europeans,” Macron said.
“Sanctions appear to be the key thing that has limited Russia,” Tusk added.
In an interview published on May 10, Kremlin spokesperson reported that Russian leader Vladimir Putin has rejected the possibility of a 30-day ceasefire unless the West halts its arms deliveries to Ukraine.
