Trump Says Russia May Accept 30-Day Ceasefire, Signals Interest in Istanbul Talks

US President Donald Trump said Russia may agree to a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine during a May 12 press conference at the White House, where he appeared alongside Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
“I think Russia will agree to a 30-day ceasefire,” Trump said, offering no further detail on whether his comment was based on intelligence, diplomatic outreach, or private discussions.
During the same briefing, Trump also said he was considering the possibility of participating in the upcoming meeting between Ukraine and Russia, scheduled to take place in Istanbul.
“We’re looking at that,” he noted, in response to a question about US involvement in potential negotiations. The Istanbul talks, proposed for May 15, follow a renewed push by international leaders to secure a temporary halt in hostilities.
The proposed 30-day ceasefire is part of a broader initiative backed by the United States and key European allies.
Earlier in the week, officials from France, Germany, Poland, and the United Kingdom—alongside Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy—held consultations with Trump before and after the “coalition of the willing” summit in Kyiv. The joint effort aims to pressure Russia into halting military operations and returning to the negotiating table.
