President Volodymyr Zelenskyy held a phone call with Romania’s newly elected President, Nicușor Dan, extending congratulations on his election victory and inviting him to make an official visit to Ukraine.

In a message posted on Telegram on May 19, Zelenskyy emphasized the importance of deepening regional cooperation and strengthening ties between Ukraine and Romania.

“It’s vital for Romania to continue its development and for us to work together, both in our region and across Europe,” Zelenskyy said. “We respect Romania and the choice of the Romanian people. It is a country that plays a critical role in European security.”

The President thanked Romania for its ongoing support and contributions to Ukraine’s defense, highlighting Bucharest’s commitment to shared values of freedom and justice.

“We are deeply grateful for the contribution to protecting the lives of our people. It is important that support for Ukraine will continue. Romania understands how vital the fight for freedom and justice is,” he added.

Zelenskyy confirmed that both leaders discussed opportunities to meet in the near future.

Earlier, Romania had accused Russia of attempting to interfere in its presidential election, following the second round of voting that brought a victory for pro-European candidate and Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan.

According to official results with 100% of precincts counted, Dan secured 53.6% of the vote, defeating pro-Russian candidate George Simion, who received 46.4%.
