Romania will continue to support Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression and could potentially serve as a logistics hub for deploying Western forces into the country, acting Romanian President Ilie Bolojan said, according to Romanian media Defense Romania on February 28.

“Regarding support for Ukraine, we have expressed our country’s commitment to continue assisting them. This is not just about supporting a victim of aggression—though that is a matter of principle—but also about ensuring our own national security,” Bolojan stated.

The acting president also warned that Romania itself could be at risk.

“If Russia maintains this course in the future, and given the historical realities of this region, Ukraine may only be the first victim,” he cautioned.

While ruling out the immediate deployment of Romanian forces to Ukraine, Bolojan acknowledged that Romania could serve as a transit hub for Western troops if such a decision were made in the future.

“At this moment, it is too early to discuss sending troops to Ukraine, as there is no peace agreement in place. Additionally, there is no parliamentary support for such a move. However, we could become a transit center for these forces, and an analysis on this can be conducted,” he said.

Earlier, the Romanian Senate approved two bills that grant the military authority to shoot down unauthorized drones and regulate the conduct of military operations on Romanian territory during peacetime.
