Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy began talks in Berlin on Sunday with US Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner on December 14.

Zelenskyy stated in a post on Telegram that Ukraine was preparing for the meeting with the American side and working “carefully on every point of every draft,” adding: “The main thing is that all steps we agree with our partners can really work for guaranteed security. Only reliable guarantees will work for peace.”

The Berlin meetings are taking place as Germany hosts Ukrainian, US and European representatives for discussions focused on a possible peace plan and the broader terms of a settlement.

Zelenskyy said a peace deal would require security assurances strong enough to prevent Russia from attacking Ukraine again, while expressing hope that partners would continue to work “constructively.”

According to Reuters reporting, the named US representatives were President Donald Trump’s envoy, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, a US official stated.

On the European side, Reuters reported that the weekend talks involved foreign policy advisers “from, among others, the US and Ukraine,” and that a wider meeting on Monday would be hosted in Berlin by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, with Zelenskyy and “European leaders,” without naming those leaders.

Earlier, it was reported that President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s negotiating format had expanded after Jared Kushner joined the US side, adding an economic track alongside a framework focused on security issues.
