Zelenskyy: Over 100 Ukrainian Brigades on the Frontlines Need Daily Equipment Support
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the need for enhanced equipment for over 100 brigades currently engaged on the frontlines, stating that addressing these needs should precede discussions about increasing troop numbers.
Zelenskyy made these remarks during a meeting with German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius in Kyiv, as reported by Interfax-Ukraine on January 14.
“We have heard discussions regarding the age of our military personnel and mobilization limits. I won’t specify an exact number as it poses a security risk, but there are more than 100 brigades on the battlefield, and each of them requires daily equipment support,” Zelenskyy stated.
He highlighted ongoing challenges with equipment maintenance and availability. Many brigades experience frequent breakdowns of critical machinery, leading to persistent shortages. According to the President, the primary focus should remain on equipping the existing units with sufficient technology before considering an increase in personnel.
“Technical shortages are a daily reality for our brigades. Equipment, whether armored vehicles, artillery, or other essential machinery, often needs repair or replacement,” Zelenskyy said.
Zelenskyy underscored the importance of ensuring soldiers are adequately equipped and trained. He noted that while increasing the size of the Ukrainian armed forces may be necessary in the long term, the immediate priority is modernizing and fully equipping the current units.
“A soldier must not only be protected but also equipped with the necessary weapons and knowledge. Our partners play a crucial role in supplying the Ukrainian army with these resources,” Zelenskyy added.
He concluded by reiterating the critical need for continued support from international allies, emphasizing that the modernization of Ukraine’s military infrastructure is as vital as its expansion.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed proposals to lower the conscription age, emphasizing that equipment shortages and insufficient training cannot be offset by deploying younger soldiers. He stressed the priority of preserving lives and reducing Russia’s military potential rather than lowering the draft age, urging unity among global allies to secure peace.
