Zelenskyy: Putin Aims to Create a Humanitarian Disaster in Ukraine This Winter

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Vladimir Putin aims to create a humanitarian catastrophe in Ukraine this winter, as Russia intensifies attacks on the country’s power grid and civilian infrastructure. Zelenskyy made the remarks during a meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street, Sky News reported on October 24.
The Ukrainian leader agreed with Starmer’s observation that the Russian dictator shows “no intention of stopping the war.”

Zelenskyy noted that the latest waves of Russian airstrikes targeting energy facilities demonstrate Moscow’s deliberate effort to leave Ukrainian cities without heat and power during the cold months.
“We’re not alone in this situation—from the very beginning of the war, but especially now,” Zelenskyy stated. “Thank you for staying with us.”
Zelenskyy said that later on Wednesday, leaders from allied nations would meet under the framework of the “Coalition of the Willing” to discuss new security guarantees for Ukraine—including air defense systems and energy assistance.

“We will discuss during the meeting of the ‘Coalition of the Willing’ security guarantees—partly, I mean, air defense and energy support. So we will talk about that. Thank you for organizing this meeting with all the partners,” Zelenskyy told reporters.
The Ukrainian president also expressed gratitude to King Charles III, who met with him earlier in the day, and praised Britain for its steadfast backing throughout the war.
Starmer, reaffirming the UK’s position, responded simply: “Always.”
Earlier, Germany stepped up its support for Ukraine’s energy security, committing around $70 million to the Energy Support Fund for Ukraine.
