UK Prepares to Send Troops to Ukraine If Peace Deal Is Reached, Defence Secretary Confirms

Britain’s Defence Secretary John Healey said on Monday that London is already preparing for the possible deployment of troops to Ukraine—but only if a peace deal is reached between Kyiv and Moscow, Sky News reported on October 20.
Speaking during a lecture in London, Healey outlined joint British-French efforts to build a “coalition of the willing”—a multinational force that could eventually deploy to Ukraine as part of a postwar stabilization mission.
The proposed force would help secure Ukraine’s skies and territorial waters and assist in training its military, should Russia agree to end its full-scale invasion.
“So as the US President leads the effort to achieve peace here in Europe, we are ready to lead the work to secure it in the long term,” Healey said.
“As for our Armed Forces, I’m already reviewing readiness levels and accelerating the allocation of millions of pounds to prepare for a possible deployment in Ukraine,” he added.

Healey’s remarks mark the first public confirmation that Britain is drawing up concrete plans for a potential military presence in Ukraine as part of a postwar security arrangement.
He also warned of a “new era of threat,” saying that the risk of a wider conflict in Europe “has not been this great since the end of the Second World War.”

Healey noted that the UK and France have spent the past six months working with more than 30 nations to form the so-called Multinational Force Ukraine. He said the UK has earmarked £100 million to ensure its troops are ready to join the mission if peace is achieved.
“This is why President Zelenskyy calls the UK his closest ally,” Healey said. “This is why Putin ranks Britain as his number one enemy.”
Earlier, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto expressed his country’s readiness to contribute peacekeeping forces to Ukraine.
