Zelenskyy Says Pokrovsk Is Russia’s Main Objective as Experts Warn Plans to Winter in the City

On October 27, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy identified Pokrovsk as the primary focus of Russian military aggression, with intense fighting ongoing in and around the city.
In a statement shared via Telegram, Zelenskyy said he had discussed the situation with military commanders and received updates on the frontlines in Pokrovsk and surrounding areas.

“That is where the largest number of the occupier’s assault forces are currently concentrated, and where significant offensive activity is taking place. Fighting continues inside the city. This is their main objective—specifically, Pokrovsk,” the president emphasized.
Zelenskyy emphasized that every gain made by Ukrainian forces in this direction is a strategic contribution to the defense of the entire country.
Military analyst Serhiy Kuzan, head of the Ukrainian Center for Security and Cooperation, said the Russian military has concentrated its most capable assault units near Pokrovsk after failing to advance in other directions, including Zaporizhzhia and Novopavlivka.
According to Kuzan, the Russian command aims to seize the city and hold positions within its urban areas through the winter. He said Moscow redeployed an estimated 7,000 to 10,500 additional troops specifically for assault operations in Pokrovsk after earlier attempts to encircle the city were unsuccessful.
“The goal is to enter the city at any cost and secure positions inside urban development, as earlier plans to encircle Pokrovsk did not succeed,” Kuzan said in an interview with Kyiv24. He added that despite the concentration of Russian forces, their losses in the area remain extremely high.
Earlier, Zelenskyy said he doubts that Vladimir Putin would accept a peace plan proposed by the Coalition of the Willing, a group of allied nations working on a framework to end Russia’s war against Ukraine.
