Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is reportedly expected to arrive in Berlin on May 27 for an unannounced visit. According to Der Spiegel, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz plans to discuss potential steps toward renewed technical negotiations between Ukraine and Russia during a personal meeting with Zelenskyy.

As reported by the news agency, he intends to update the Ukrainian president on the European Union’s forthcoming sanctions package against Russia. The proposed measures are designed to increase pressure on Moscow to engage in serious negotiations.

The outlet adds that Zelenskyy is also scheduled to meet with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier during his visit.

Officials are reportedly preparing support strategies to assist Ukraine’s defense industry in producing long-range weapons systems.

On May 9, it was revealed that the new German government has decided to significantly limit the release of information regarding future arms shipments to Ukraine.

Earlier, on April 13, shortly before becoming the Chancellor, it was reported that Merz signaled his willingness to provide Ukraine with long-range Taurus cruise missiles, marking a potential shift in Berlin’s military support as Kyiv continues to press for more high-precision weapons to hit deep into Russian-held territory.
