On August 26, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that this week Kyiv will engage with several countries that could serve as potential platforms for negotiations with Russia.

“Right now, this week there will be contacts with Türkiye, contacts with Gulf countries , and with European countries that could be venues for discussions with the Russians. On our side, everything will be prepared to the maximum, to end the war. It is important that our partners confirm this,” Zelenskyy said.

He emphasized that the next steps will depend largely on the decisions of global leaders, particularly the United States.

“And further, everything will depend solely on the will of the world leaders – primarily the US—to put pressure on Russia. New steps are needed, new pressure: sanctions, tariffs – all of this must be on the table,” Zelenskyy added.

On August 25, Zelenskyy met with Keith Kellogg, the US President’s Special Representative for Ukraine, to discuss the return of Ukrainian children abducted by Russia, security and defense cooperation, and strategies to maintain pressure on Moscow.

On the same day, US President Donald Trump told reporters at the White House that failure to reach a resolution on Russia’s war in Ukraine could carry serious repercussions.

“There could be very significant consequences, but we’ll see what happens. This is something that has to end,” Trump said, underscoring the stakes of ongoing negotiations.

Earlier, it was reported that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that Ukraine can only “exist” if it gives up the territories annexed by Moscow—an ultimatum echoing Putin’s reported demands to end the war.
