Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced the launch of the “Drone Line” initiative on February 9, outlining a new phase in the integration of unmanned aerial systems (UAS) into the country’s defense strategy.

The project is designed to enhance the effectiveness of existing drone units, expand their capabilities, and scale their combat experience across Ukraine’s defense forces.

According to Zelenskyy, the initiative unites four newly established separate regiments and an independent brigade specializing in drone operations. These units have demonstrated their operational efficiency and leadership on the battlefield and will now serve as the foundation for further technological advancements in Ukraine’s military.

The primary objective of the Drone Line is to strengthen infantry units by providing continuous reconnaissance, precision strikes, and real-time battlefield awareness. This approach aims to improve coordination between drone operators and ground forces, ensuring more effective engagement with enemy units while reducing casualties among Ukrainian troops.

The project, initiated by the President, is being implemented in coordination with the Command of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, the State Border Guard Service, and the Ministries of Defense and Digital Transformation. The first phase focuses on enhancing five drone-based units that have already established themselves as key components in Ukraine’s defense operations:

  • 20th Separate Regiment “K-2”

  • 429th Regiment “Achilles”

  • 427th Regiment “Raroh”

  • 414th Independent Brigade “Birds of Magyar”

  • “Phoenix” Regiment of the “Revenge” Brigade within the State Border Guard Service

These units play a crucial role in Ukraine’s strategy of establishing “kill zones"—areas where Russian Forces movements are detected and neutralized before they can engage Ukrainian positions. The integration of drones into front-line operations is intended to reduce direct engagements between Ukrainian infantry and enemy forces, thus minimizing losses while maintaining territorial control.

The implementation of the Drone Line aligns with broader efforts to modernize Ukraine’s military by leveraging advanced technologies. While the Separate Unmanned Systems Forces (SUSF) focus on testing new drone platforms, including maritime and long-range UAVs, the newly formed drone regiments within the Ground Forces and Border Guard prioritize battlefield control and immediate operational impact.

Key expected outcomes of the initiative include:

  • Expanded aerial surveillance and intelligence capabilities

  • Increased protection and support for infantry units

  • Enhanced remote monitoring of enemy movements

  • Faster response to emerging battlefield threats

  • Greater precision and effectiveness in targeting enemy positions

Earlier, Ukraine introduced a new UAV capable of carrying and deploying up to six FPV drones mid-flight, effectively serving as a “mother drone” or a flying drone aircraft carrier. This innovation allows FPV drones to reach deep behind enemy lines, bypassing electronic warfare systems and striking targets previously out of range. While specific details remain classified, the concept enhances Ukraine’s ability to counter Russian forces by extending the operational reach of its drone fleet.
