Simultaneously serves as Acting National Security Advisor since May 2025. Key figure in US-mediated Ukraine-Russia ceasefire talks, holding direct meetings with Sergey Lavrov; advocates a negotiated settlement while maintaining that Ukraine must have leverage in any peace deal. Has been the primary US interlocutor with President Zelenskyy on the terms of a potential ceasefire.
