As Russia Set Kyiv Ablaze, Firefighters Rushed to Save the City—Photos

Flames devoured rooftops. Smoke choked entire blocks. As air raid sirens wailed through the night, Kyiv’s firefighters ran toward the destruction that Russia had unleashed, once again.
In the early hours of June 10, Russia launched a massive drone and missile attack on Ukraine. Ukrainian air defense systems intercepted most of the threats, neutralizing 284 out of 315 Shahed drones and all seven missiles, including North Korean-made KN‑23s and Russian Iskanders.

In seven of Kyiv’s ten districts, emergency crews worked through the night—pulling hoses through rubble, scaling burning buildings, and dousing the flames before they could spread further. Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (SES) deployed a Portuguese-supplied Ka-32 helicopter to assist in extinguishing fires caused by a Russian drone attack.

Despite this success, debris and blast waves damaged residential buildings, schools, and Kyiv’s Saint Sophia Cathedral—a UNESCO World Heritage site. Fires broke out in multiple neighborhoods. Civilians spent the night sheltering in metro stations as air raid sirens wailed across the capital.

The strikes were part of a nationwide attack. In Odesa, a maternity hospital was hit. At least five civilians are confirmed dead and more than a dozen injured across Ukraine.
