EU Sanctions Five Russian Defense Figures Following Airstrikes on Ukraine

The European Union has adopted new targeted sanctions against five individuals linked to Russia’s military-industrial complex in response to a recent wave of Russian airstrikes across Ukraine, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kallas wrote in a post on X on August 7.

The move delivers on previous warnings from Brussels that sanctions pressure would continuously escalate. Following the adoption of the EU’s 21st sanctions package on July 23—which targeted Russian energy hubs, shadow fleet tankers, and long-range drone manufacturers—Kaja Kallas affirmed that European authorities remained ready to impose further restrictions in response to Russian aggression.

The restrictive measures directly penalize key figures involved in sustaining Moscow’s defense manufacturing capacity as the Kremlin continues its aerial bombardment of Ukrainian territory.

“Each new attack on Ukraine is another reason for Europe to tighten the screws on Russia,” Kallas stated on X. “As a response to the recent series of Russian airstrikes, the EU today adopted new sanctions listings targeting five individuals involved in Russia’s military-industrial complex”.

“With its army stalled on the battlefield, Moscow is further escalating its campaign of terror against civilians,” Kallas wrote on X, emphasizing that Brussels remains committed to sustained economic deterrence.
