Russian authorities declared a drone threat overnight, although there have been no official reports confirming that the fire was caused by an attack.

According to Astra on July 25, the fire occurred roughly two kilometers from Engels-2, one of Russia’s main strategic bomber bases. Satellite data from NASA’s FIRMS system also detected a thermal anomaly in the area shortly after the incident.

Using geolocation analysis, Astra identified the burning structure as a building within a military unit at coordinates 51.4795, 46.1653, situated approximately two kilometers from the Engels-2 air base. Videos published by Exilenova+ on X appeared to show the fire expanding significantly after the first footage emerged.

NASA’s Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) recorded a heat signature in the same area at 01:46 local time, providing independent confirmation that a major fire was burning near the military facility.

No official statements regarding the incident had been issued by Russian regional authorities at the time of publication.

The military installation is located near several defense-related facilities, including the 356th Aircraft Repair Plant, according to open-source mapping reviewed by Astra.

Engels-2, located around 550–600 kilometers from Ukraine’s border, is one of Russia’s primary bases for long-range aviation. The airfield is capable of hosting the Russian Air Force’s strategic bomber fleet, including Tu-160, Tu-95MS, and Tu-22M3 aircraft.

The base has been targeted repeatedly during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. On July 16, Ukrainian forces struck the airfield, destroying a Tu-95MS strategic bomber. Satellite imagery later confirmed catastrophic damage to the aircraft, with its tail section completely destroyed, rendering it beyond repair.
