Fire Erupts Near Major Volgograd Refinery After Drone Attack

A drone attack targeted industrial infrastructure in Russia’s Volgograd region overnight, with a large fire visible near major industrial facilities, OSINT channel ASTRA reported on October 2.
Volgograd region Governor Andrei Bocharov claimed the attack was carried out by Ukrainian drones and confirmed that a residential building caught fire in the city’s Krasnoarmeysky district. One person was hospitalized.

Ukraine’s strikes on Russian oil refineries, launched in retaliation for Russian attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure, have repeatedly disrupted fuel production and contributed to shortages nationwide. UNITED24 Media reported that the campaign had disabled more than 45% of Russia’s refining capacity by September, increasing pressure on fuel supplies and refinery operations.
“Tonight, as a result of a massive UAV attack on the industrial infrastructure of the Volgograd region, a fire was recorded in an apartment building on Udmurtskaya Street,” Bocharov stated. “One injured person was hospitalized, the fire has been contained.”
Residents reported numerous explosions across Volgograd and published footage showing drones in flight and air defenses operating. ASTRA initially noted that its OSINT specialist had not independently verified the footage.
Further analysis of eyewitness footage placed the glow from a major fire in the area of the Volgograd oil refinery and the Kaustik chemical plant, which are located close to each other. ASTRA emphasized that the available footage did not make it possible to determine which facility was burning.
The Volgograd refinery, operated by Lukoil, is one of Russia’s largest oil-processing facilities, with an annual capacity of roughly 14.8–15.7 million tons of crude, or about 5% of Russia’s total refining capacity. It produces gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel, fuel oil, and bitumen, ASTRA noted.
Kaustik is a major chemical producer in southern Volgograd. According to ASTRA, the facility manufactures dual-use basic chemicals considered important to Russia’s military-industrial sector.

Russia’s aviation authority also imposed restrictions at Volgograd airport at around 1 a.m., disrupting flights to and from Moscow. One aircraft was diverted to Samara after several hours of delay, the outlet wrote.
The same Volgograd refinery was already struck on July 31, when drones also hit a major Wildberries logistics hub in the city and fires broke out at both sites.
