Kyiv’s South Bridge Hit as Russian Ballistic Missiles and 280 Drones Hammer the Capital

Russian ballistic missiles struck Kyiv’s South Bridge during a massive overnight assault that also sent 280 drones toward Ukraine, forcing the bridge to close and disrupting metro service across part of the capital.
Russia launched a massive overnight attack against Ukraine, sending 280 drones—including 69 jet-powered Shaheds—along with ballistic missiles, with Kyiv identified as the main target.
The strike damaged the capital’s South Bridge, forcing authorities to close it to traffic and suspend metro service across part of the city, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko on October 27.

Klitschko said specialists were inspecting the South Bridge to determine the extent of the damage following the Russian attack.
Traffic across the bridge has been completely suspended while the assessment is underway.
The strike also disrupted Kyiv’s Green Line metro service, with trains temporarily halted between Osokorky and Chervonyi Khutir stations. Authorities have not yet said when either the bridge or the affected section of the metro will reopen.
Klitschko also released the first photographs showing damage to the bridge following the attack.

Russia is increasingly targeting Kyiv’s seven bridges across the Dnipro River in an effort to divide the Ukrainian capital and disrupt transport connections across northern Ukraine.
Disrupting crossings over the Dnipro could effectively split the city in two, with consequences extending far beyond the capital.
According to Ukraine’s military, Russia launched Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles from Russia’s Bryansk region as well as 280 strike and decoy drones from multiple locations in Russia, the occupied Donetsk region, and occupied Crimea.
The drone force included Shaheds, Gerberas, Parodiya decoys, and other types. Sixty-nine of the Shaheds were jet-powered variants. Kyiv was the primary target of the attack.
Ukrainian fighter aircraft, surface-to-air missile units, electronic warfare teams, drone units, and mobile fire groups were all involved in repelling the strike.

By 9 am, Ukrainian air defenses had shot down or suppressed 257 aerial targets, including two Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles and 255 drones.
Among the intercepted UAVs were 56 jet-powered Shaheds.
Several attack drones were still airborne when the preliminary figures were released, and air-defense operations remained underway.
Ukraine reported Russian strikes at 25 locations, while debris from intercepted targets fell at another 16 sites.
This is not the first Russian strike on one of Kyiv’s bridges. Previously, a Russian Shahed drone struck Kyiv’s South Bridge as a metro train crossed.
Passengers reported hearing an explosion and seeing a flash as the drone hit near the roadway. Smoke then appeared inside the carriage, ash entered through the ventilation system, and several windows were blown out.
