Russia may increasingly target Kyiv’s seven bridges across the Dnipro River in an effort to divide the Ukrainian capital and disrupt transport connections across northern Ukraine, The Telegraph reported on October 8.

The outlet warned that Moscow is shifting its focus toward critical civilian infrastructure ahead of winter.

According to the outlet, the bridges represent a significant vulnerability because Kyiv serves as a major road and railway hub. Disrupting crossings over the Dnipro could effectively split the city in two, with consequences extending far beyond the capital.

“The seven bridges across the Dnipro are obvious targets,” The Telegraph wrote, arguing that severing these connections could have a paralyzing effect on transportation and logistics throughout northern Ukraine.

The assessment follows two recent Russian drone strikes targeting bridges in Kyiv.

On October 3, a Russian strike damaged the capital’s Northern Bridge, affecting its roadway and overhead trolleybus power lines and forcing authorities to temporarily restrict traffic across the Dnipro.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that the attack damaged the bridge’s road surface and electrical infrastructure used by trolleybuses. Traffic from the capital’s left bank toward the right bank was subsequently suspended while emergency responders and municipal crews worked at the scene.

The strike occurred shortly after an air raid alert was issued over the threat of Russian drones. Explosions were reported across Kyiv before officials confirmed damage to the crossing.

Two days earlier, on October 1, a Russian Shahed-type drone struck Kyiv’s Pivdennyi Bridge as a metro train was crossing, according to footage and eyewitness accounts shared online.

Passengers reported hearing an explosion and seeing a bright flash as the drone struck near the roadway. Smoke subsequently spread through the train carriage, ash entered through the ventilation system, and several windows were shattered.
