A Russian Shahed-type drone struck Kyiv’s Pivdennyi Bridge as a metro train crossed, according to footage and reports published online on October 1.

Passengers reported hearing an explosion and seeing a flash as the drone hit near the roadway. Smoke then appeared inside the carriage, ash entered through the ventilation system, and several windows were blown out.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko later confirmed two drone strikes near the bridge’s support structure.

“There were two UAV strikes near the support section of the Pivdennyi Bridge,” Klitschko stated. “Metro and surface public transport across the bridge have now been suspended.”

He added that specialists from Kyivavtoshliakhmist were inspecting the structure following the strikes.

No passengers were reported injured. The train continued to Vydubychi station, where passengers were evacuated from the damaged carriage.

Days earlier, a Russian strike hit the Presidium of Ukraine’s National Academy of Sciences in Kyiv, killing two scientists and leaving several staff members unaccounted for.
