Russia continued its aerial attacks on Kyiv on October 8, with a Russian drone striking a four-story store in the capital’s Solomianskyi district, killing at least two people and injuring two others, according to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko on October 8.

Emergency crews contained a fire that broke out inside the building following the strike. The bodies of two people were later recovered from the site, while two others were reported injured.

Search-and-rescue operations remained underway as emergency workers continued examining the damaged structure.

The strike came while Russian drones were still approaching the Ukrainian capital and Kyiv’s air defenses were actively engaging targets overhead.

“Air defense forces are operating in the capital. Stay in safe places!” Klitschko wrote at 11:20 am.

Earlier, Ukraine’s Air Force had warned that jet-powered drones were moving toward Kyiv. The newer jet-driven UAVs travel substantially faster than conventional propeller-powered Shahed-type drones, reducing the time available for detection and interception.

Previously, reports emerged that Russian attacks on Ukrainian civilians were becoming increasingly deadly, with July recording the highest monthly civilian casualty toll since May 2022.

Russian strikes killed 437 civilians in July alone and wounded another 2,610 people.
