Moldova Sets Up Emergency Safe Zones Amid Mounting Drone Threats

Moldova is establishing designated safe zones at border checkpoints to allow staff and travelers to evacuate to secure locations in the event of drone strikes, Newsmaker reported, citing Interior Minister Daniella Misail-Nichitin.
The Moldovan government is also moving its border guards out of joint control facilities located inside Ukrainian territory back to Moldova. The relocation specifically affects personnel at the Criva and Palanca checkpoints.

Meanwhile, the Moldovan border guard who was injured on October 5 near the Palanca–Mayaky–Udobne crossing remains hospitalized in stable condition, with doctors reporting no threat to his life.
The guard was injured when a munition landed near the checkpoint, ricocheted off the ground, and struck a commuter bus.
Operations at the crossing were temporarily halted for several hours. Moldovan authorities stated the incident resulted from Russian strikes targeting Ukrainian infrastructure.

On the morning of October 3, five unmanned aerial vehicles crossed into Moldova’s airspace within a 15-minute window during a large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine, leading to reported explosions across several districts.
Police and military units were dispatched to secure multiple impact sites after drone debris was discovered near agricultural land and residential communities, including an explosion in a vineyard near Crocmaz that damaged windows and sparked a local fire.
In response, Moldova’s Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the airspace violation, warning that Russia’s ongoing aggression against Ukraine continued to pose direct threats to national and regional security.
