Russia Boosts Black Sea Ship Security and Reroutes Cargo Amid Escalating Ukrainian Drone Attacks

Russia is stepping up security for commercial shipping in the Azov-Black Sea basin while developing alternative freight routes to counter a sharp escalation in maritime drone attacks, Reuters reported on August 3.

In response to what it described as a “tense situation in the Sea of Azov stemming from hostile drone attacks on maritime vessels,” the Russian Transport Ministry announced it has established a specialized task force to identify new logistics routes and shift cargo to alternative modes of transport.

The ministry noted that a number of stevedoring companies have already agreed to process additional freight volumes and accelerate shipment handling at regional terminals.

Together with the Russian Defence Ministry, authorities are implementing additional measures to ensure navigational safety and shield commercial vessels operating within the Azov-Black Sea corridor, according to the official statement cited by Reuters.

The defensive measures reflect growing anxiety over deteriorating security along vital commercial shipping routes. In recent weeks, both Russia and Ukraine—two of the world’s primary agricultural exporters—have targeted each other’s grain facilities and commercial vessels in the Black Sea, driving global wheat prices higher on international markets, Reuters detailed.
