Russia Built a $1.5 Million System to Jam Starlink. Ukraine Found and Destroyed Another One

Ukraine has destroyed one of Russia’s newest electronic warfare systems designed to jam Starlink, striking a Volna Kupol Garant complex at a military facility in Gelendzhik, according to Ukrainian OSINT channel Exilenova+ and the pro-Russian military channels on August 8.

The system was positioned inside Russian military unit No. 2156 and was struck on August 7. Satellite imagery published by Ukrainian OSINT analysts subsequently confirmed damage at the site.

The loss marks at least the third recent strike against this type of Russian electronic warfare system. Ukrainian forces previously reported targeting Volna Kupol Garant stations on June 14 and June 25, including one complex in Kerch.

Russian forces have increasingly deployed the system in response to Ukrainian long-range attacks against military logistics inside Russia and across temporarily occupied Ukrainian territory.

According to Ukrainian assessments, the Volna Kupol Garant uses multiple antennas to generate powerful interference across eight satellite-data frequency channels between 14 and 14.5 GHz, with each channel spanning 62.5 MHz. A single complex is intended to create a protected jamming zone around the position it covers.

But the system’s size and powerful emissions create a major vulnerability of their own.

“Because of the system’s enormous dimensions, concealing it in the field is practically impossible, while its powerful emissions help the enemy locate the complex even deep in the rear,” the pro-Russian Military Informant channel said.

According to Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov, an adviser to Ukraine’s defense leadership, the Volna Kupol Garant is manufactured by Russian Kupol LLC in temporarily occupied Simferopol and supplied to the Russian military at a reported cost of about $1.5 million per unit.

Russia did not appear to deploy the system extensively again until 2026, when its use increased amid Ukraine’s expanding deep-strike campaign and growing reliance on satellite communications across the battlefield.

Earlier, the Russian company Bureau 1440 launched a second group of communications satellites for Rassvet, Moscow’s planned low-Earth-orbit alternative to Starlink.
