Ukrainian drone operators have struck a Russian Buk-M1 surface-to-air missile system on the Huliaipole axis, where Moscow has been moving additional air defenses forward to counter increasingly active Ukrainian aviation, Ukraine’s 7th Rapid Response Corps of the Air Assault Forces reported on October 22.

The strike was carried out by operators from the 433rd Separate Unmanned Systems Regiment.

Footage released by the corps shows the Russian Buk-M1 being detected and hit after it was positioned in the area to help protect Russian rear positions from Ukrainian airstrikes.

During a subsequent mission, the drone crews also located and struck another camouflaged air-defense target, although the exact type of system has not yet been identified.

Russian forces have been attempting to conceal their air-defense equipment inside tree lines, but Ukrainian troops say the changing season is increasingly working against them as vegetation thins and large military systems become easier to detect from the air.

“The occupiers carefully camouflage their air defenses in forest belts. However, autumn is not working in their favor: the greenery is gradually disappearing, and hiding expensive equipment is becoming increasingly difficult. Coordinated interaction between units under the operational command of the 7th Air Assault Corps and effective intelligence sharing are producing results,” the corps said.

The Buk-M1 is a medium-range air-defense system designed to engage aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles, and other aerial targets. Its deployment on the Huliaipole axis reflects Russia’s effort to strengthen protection of rear areas as Ukrainian aircraft continue striking military targets behind the front.

But moving such systems closer to the battlefield also exposes them to Ukrainian reconnaissance and strike drones—especially as the natural cover Russian crews rely on begins disappearing with the onset of autumn.

Earlier, Ukrainian forces identified and struck a Russian Buk-M3 medium-range surface-to-air missile system valued at approximately $45 million.
