In May 2026, Ukraine’s unmanned systems units reported what they described as a record level of battlefield activity, with more than 19,000 Russian personnel affected in less than three weeks.

According to data released on 20 May by the commander of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces within the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Major Robert Brovdi, Ukrainian drone units struck 19,203 members of Russian forces over the first 19 days of May.

He said that units under the Unmanned Systems Forces alone were responsible for more than 6,000 of those reported losses.

“More than 30,000 ‘vermin’ during May 2026 will certainly be reached (not including artillery results, losses from close combat, deep strikes, and the estimated 18–20% of cases that remain unconfirmed),” Brovdi said, commenting on the scale of operations.

He added that the overall monthly figure could exceed 34,000, which he described as consistent with the historical rate of monthly replenishment of Russian manpower.

At the same time, he noted operational constraints affecting the pace of strikes, citing seasonal vegetation and a temporary slowdown of Russian activity on several active frontline sectors.

In contrast, Russian military losses in April 2026 reached 35,203 killed and wounded, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense. Ukrainian forces also reported striking more than 160,000 targets over the same period.

The data points to a broader trend: during the first two months of spring 2026, Russian forces have reportedly suffered over 70,000 casualties. If current patterns continue, total losses for the season could surpass 100,000 killed and wounded.

This comes amid Russia’s announced spring offensive, which has so far failed to achieve significant operational gains. No major Ukrainian city has been seized, and Ukrainian defenses continue to hold along key fronts, limiting Russian advances and preventing Moscow from declaring meaningful breakthroughs.

As of May 21, over the past 24 hours Russian forces lost an additional 910 personnel, Ukraine’s General Staff reported. The latest data indicates that since the start of the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, Russia’s estimated total personnel losses have reached approximately 1,352,980.
