Russia Targets Civilian Corn Export Vessel Near Odesa, Leaving 10 Dead

A Russian strike on a civilian merchant vessel flying the flag of Guinea-Bissau near Odesa has killed 10 people, including a Ukrainian maritime pilot, the Ukrainian Seaports Administration reported July 20.
The cargo ship, which had just finished loading a shipment of corn, was struck on July 19 as it was navigating out of a Ukrainian port. The vessel was manned by 17 crew members holding Syrian and Indian citizenship, accompanied by a harbor pilot from the “Delta-Pilot” branch of the state maritime enterprise.

According to official maritime reports, an emergency search and rescue operation spanned the entire night, enabling emergency crews to localize the shipboard fire and safely transport eight survivors to the shore.
The Ukrainian Seaports Administration condemned the attack, characterizing it as a deliberate violation of international maritime law designed to undermine global food security and disrupt the freedom of commercial navigation.
Russia has repeatedly targeted civilian vessels in Ukrainian waters. Most recently, a Russian missile struck an Antigua and Barbuda-flagged merchant ship in the Odesa region, killing one person and injuring three others.
