Russian forces attacked a civilian cargo vessel flying the flag of the Marshall Islands with a drone on the evening of July 14 while it was in one of the ports of Ukraine's Odesa region, killing two people.

Odesa Regional Military Administration Head Oleh Kiper reported that the strike damaged the vessel's superstructure and sparked a fire on board.

The identities of the victims have not yet been disclosed.

“The enemy continues to deliberately strike civilians and civilian infrastructure, flagrantly violating international humanitarian law,” Kiper said.

The latest attack follows another Russian strike on civilian shipping earlier the same day. According to Ukrainian authorities, Russian forces attacked two merchant vessels transiting Ukraine's maritime corridor in the Black Sea. The ships were sailing under the flags of Tanzania and Liberia.

Kiper said the attacks killed the captain of the Tanzania-flagged vessel and injured three other crew members. Suspilne also reported that the deceased captain was aboard the Tanzanian vessel.

The latest strike adds to a series of Russian attacks on commercial vessels operating from Ukrainian ports. On July 13, a Russian strike hit a Togo-flagged ship unloading mineral fertilizers in the Odesa region, killing three crew members and injuring five others.

Earlier, on June 22, drones targeted three foreign-flagged vessels transiting Ukraine's maritime corridor. The attack killed a 58-year-old Egyptian sailor aboard a Panama-flagged cargo ship and forced eight crew members to evacuate onto a life raft.
