Russia Unleashes 27 Ballistic Missiles at Kyiv, Only One Is Intercepted

At least nine people were killed and 30 others injured after Russia carried out a large-scale overnight missile and drone attack across Ukraine, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service (DSNS), the Kyiv City Military Administration, and local authorities.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Russia launched 220 aerial weapons during the attack, including 35 missiles and 185 drones.

The missile salvo consisted of 27 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles, four Tsirkon/Oniks anti-ship missiles, two Kh-31 anti-radiation missiles, and two Kh-59/69 guided air-launched missiles. In addition to Kyiv, strikes targeted the Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, Kharkiv, and Poltava regions.

Ukraine’s Air Force said air defenses destroyed or suppressed 156 aerial targets, including one Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missile, one Kh-59/69 guided missile, and 154 drones. According to preliminary data, 26 ballistic missiles, four anti-ship missiles, and 23 attack drones struck 21 locations, while debris from intercepted targets fell at two additional sites. Three missiles failed to reach their intended targets.

The attack caused damage across at least seven districts of Kyiv, according to the National Police and city authorities. Residential apartment buildings, private homes, a school, supermarkets, civilian vehicles, Lithuania’s embassy, and other civilian infrastructure were damaged.

The deadliest damage was reported in the Darnytskyi district, where seven people were killed and 14 injured, including two children. In the Solomianskyi district, two people were killed after a five-story apartment building partially collapsed and caught fire. Rescue crews evacuated 35 residents from the upper floors of the building.

Elsewhere in the capital, fires broke out at several non-residential buildings, ambulances were damaged by fire, and firefighters contained a blaze on the grounds of a Kyiv film studio. Damage was also reported to commercial facilities, private homes, and civilian vehicles across multiple districts.

The strike also extended beyond the capital. In the Kyiv region, emergency services reported a fire at an industrial facility in Bucha district that injured two people, while a private home was damaged in the Vyshhorod district.

Following the attack, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine intercepted only one ballistic missile because of a shortage of Patriot interceptor missiles.

“Very importantly, our partners must hear that these systems are needed not somewhere in warehouses for possible scenarios, but here and now, so that Russia’s war can be contained and stopped in Ukraine. Every package of anti-ballistic systems saves lives. Every night without them leads to casualties,” Zelenskyy wrote.

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha also called for faster deliveries of additional air defense systems and interceptor missiles.

“The speed of decisions and deliveries is crucial. Every decision that strengthens Ukraine’s air defense saves human lives, while every delay leads to deaths and war crimes,” Sybiha said.

The attack came just two days after Russia launched another nationwide aerial assault involving more than 70 missiles and 280 attack drones, killing at least eight people, including a family of five in the Dnipropetrovsk region, and causing widespread damage from Kyiv to Lviv.
