Russia Unleashes Ballistic Missiles and Drones on Kyiv Hours After US Envoys Depart

Russia launched a massive overnight missile and drone attack on Kyiv and the surrounding region, killing at least two people in the capital and injuring 12 others as strikes and falling debris damaged residential buildings, businesses, warehouses and a private school, according to the Ukrainian State Emergency Service (SES) on September 8.

Russia used jet-powered drones, ballistic missiles and other missile types during the barrage.

Emergency crews reported destruction and fires across at least five districts of the capital.

In the Holosiivskyi district, debris and strikes were recorded at several locations. Warehouse facilities and the grounds of a private school caught fire, while debris hit a residential building and trapped people inside their apartments.

A 26-story building under construction was also hit around the 23rd floor, damaging structural elements but causing no subsequent fire.

In the Solomianskyi district, fires broke out in a nonresidential building as well as three-story and five-story apartment buildings. Residents became trapped inside the five-story building, with emergency crews rescuing 12 people. One person had already been hospitalized before State Emergency Service units arrived.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said five of the 10 people injured across the capital were hospitalized, including two in serious condition.

In the Darnytskyi district, falling debris damaged and set fire to warehouse facilities. A garage next to a private home also caught fire, and a vehicle was damaged. According to Ukrainian Police, a 29-year-old foreigner sustained injuries in the district as a result of a Russian attack.

The Podilskyi district saw debris fall at several nonresidential locations, triggering warehouse fires and damaging another building. Vehicles and garages were also reported burning during the attack.

In the Shevchenkivskyi district, debris sparked another fire inside warehouse facilities.

Emergency workers and municipal crews continued operating across Kyiv through the morning, extinguishing fires, clearing wreckage and assessing damage.

The surrounding Kyiv region also came under heavy attack, according to Timur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv Regional Military Administration.

Homes, businesses, warehouses and vehicles were damaged across several districts, according to regional authorities.

In Bila Tserkva, one person suffered shrapnel wounds. Private homes and warehouse facilities were also damaged in the Brovary, Boryspil, Obukhiv and Fastiv districts.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha noted that the barrage came shortly after US peace envoys had left, arguing that Russia’s actions contradicted Moscow’s diplomatic rhetoric.

“The moment the US President’s peace envoys left, Putin launched another massive, horrific attack against Kyiv, damaging residential areas and killing at least two people,” Sybiha said.

He said the continued use of ballistic missiles against residential areas demonstrated why Ukraine’s partners should not delay decisions on additional military support.

“His ballistic missiles speak louder than his words on diplomacy. Strike after strike on residential buildings brings him no closer to winning this war—it is nothing but senseless terror,” Sybiha stated.

The foreign minister also renewed Kyiv’s call for additional air-defense ammunition, saying delays in deliveries have immediate consequences for civilians.

“Every interceptor provided to Ukraine now is a saved life. Missiles in stocks, including those nearing their expiry date, should work to protect Ukrainian skies,” Sybiha said.

He urged Ukraine’s allies to increase pressure on Moscow, arguing that such measures would support rather than undermine diplomatic efforts.

“Pressure on Moscow advances diplomacy—it does not obstruct it. Stronger pressure brings peace closer,” Sybiha added.

Previously, Russia deliberately targeted airports in Kyiv and Boryspil in what Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said may have been a response to preparations for a possible US delegation to arrive in Ukraine by air.
