Russia Pounds Kyiv in Massive Combined Attack, Killing at Least 13 and Damaging Children’s Hospital

Russia launched a major ballistic missile attack on Kyiv, with explosions reported across the Ukrainian capital and damage recorded in several districts, according to Ukraine’s Air Force and Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko late on August 19.

At 11:53 pm, Ukraine’s Air Force reported ballistic missiles heading toward Kyiv from the north. The Air Force said Russia had launched at least 10 ballistic missiles.

The death toll from Russia’s overnight mass attack on Kyiv has risen to 12, with 33 people wounded, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported. Seven of those killed were in the capital’s Solomianskyi district. One more person was killed in the Kyiv region.

Kyiv has declared August 21 a day of mourning for the victims. Flags will be lowered across the city, while entertainment events will be suspended.

Emergency crews continued working at strike sites in the Sviatoshynskyi, Solomianskyi, and Darnytskyi districts, where Russian missiles caused extensive damage to residential buildings, warehouses, medical facilities, and other infrastructure.

In Solomianskyi, the eighth and ninth floors of a nine-story residential building were destroyed, and a fire spread from the seventh through the ninth floors. Windows were also blown out in nearby residential buildings and a medical facility, while cars, garages, and a store caught fire.

People were reported trapped inside two residential buildings and in a school shelter as emergency crews worked to reach them.

In Sviatoshynskyi, a strike hit an industrial site, while fires broke out at several warehouses. In Darnytskyi, a non-residential facility was hit, setting warehouses and vehicles ablaze across roughly 1,000 square meters. Rescuers pulled one person from the site and handed them over to medics.

Ukraine’s Air Force said Russia launched a total of 214 aerial targets at Kyiv and the surrounding region overnight, of which Ukrainian air defenses destroyed or suppressed 186.

The attack included 36 Kh-101, Iskander-K and Kh-59 cruise and air-launched missiles, with 31 intercepted; all eight Kalibr cruise missiles were also destroyed. Air defenses additionally intercepted both Banderol loitering munitions launched during the attack.

Russia also deployed 168 Shahed, Gerbera and other types of drones, 145 of which were shot down or electronically suppressed, according to the Air Force.

The attack also caused significant damage outside the capital. In Boryspil, Russian strikes hit food warehouses and facilities belonging to the Red Cross, according to Ukraine’s prime minister. Firefighters continued working to extinguish fires at the affected sites.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia had deliberately prepared a large combined strike using ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones to inflict maximum damage on civilian infrastructure.

“It was a massive attack – the Russians had been preparing for a long time, combining different types of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones, aiming to cause as much damage as possible to civilian infrastructure,” Zelenskyy said.

He confirmed that residential buildings in Kyiv had been damaged, including the high-rise whose upper floors were destroyed, as well as a children’s hospital and a school.

Zelenskyy also said one person was killed in the Kyiv region, bringing the confirmed death toll from the broader attack beyond the capital to at least 13.

The strike extended beyond Kyiv. In the Odesa region, Russia attacked a border crossing with Moldova using drones, while gas infrastructure was targeted in the Chernihiv region.

Zelenskyy said the scale of the attack again highlighted Ukraine’s shortage of ballistic missile defenses and the continued importance of Patriot interceptors.

“And as long as Ukraine does not have enough anti-ballistic defense, Russia will not consider peace seriously,” he said.

He added that Ukraine continues work on its FREYJA missile defense program but stressed that domestically developed systems cannot yet replace Patriot.

“But Patriot interceptors cannot yet be replaced, and we need them every day. Every additional missile saves the lives of our people,” Zelenskyy said.

Previously, a Russian strike on the Main National Police Headquarters in the Zhytomyr region on August 19 resulted in the deaths of two police officers and injured over 40 people.
