Russian Ballistic Barrage Hits Kyiv—Hospital Damaged, Warehouses Ablaze, People Trapped in Shelter

Russia unleashes a heavy ballistic missile attack on Kyiv overnight, killing two and wounding at least 12 other people, damaging a children’s hospital, setting warehouses ablaze, and reportedly trapping people inside a shelter as emergency crews race across the capital.

Russia launched a major ballistic missile attack on Kyiv, with explosions reported across the Ukrainian capital and damage recorded in several districts, according to Ukraine’s Air Force and Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko late on August 19.

At 11:53 pm, Ukraine’s Air Force reported ballistic missiles heading toward Kyiv from the north. The Air Force said Russia had launched at least 10 ballistic missiles.

UPD. As of 1:06 pm, Klitschko reported that one person was killed and at least three people were wounded in the Russian airstrike on Kyiv.

UPD2. As of 1:15 pm, Kyiv City Military Administration reported that the number of injured in the Russian attack on Kyiv increased to six; two women were killed.

UPD3. As of 1:40 pm, the number of people injured in the Russian attack increased to 12.

As the barrage continued, fires and damage were reported across the Sviatoshynskyi, Darnytskyi, and Solomianskyi districts.

In Solomianskyi, debris fell near a five-story residential building, blowing out windows and causing a fire. Emergency crews and medical teams were dispatched to the area.

In addition, later reports indicated that the upper floors of the 9-story residential building have collapsed, and a fire has broken out.

At another address, people are trapped inside a residential building, according to the Kyiv Mayor.

A children’s hospital in the same district was also damaged, with windows shattered and vehicles burning on its grounds.

In Sviatoshynskyi, a strike hit a non-residential area, and warehouse facilities caught fire. Non-residential buildings were also burning in the Darnytskyi district.

Klitschko said preliminary information indicated that people were trapped inside a shelter in Solomianskyi as emergency services headed to the scene.

The full extent of the damage and possible casualties was still being assessed as emergency crews responded to multiple locations across Kyiv.

Previously, a Russian strike on the Main National Police Headquarters in the Zhytomyr region on August 19 resulted in the deaths of two police officers and injured over 40 people.
