Editor’s note: this is a developing story.

Russian forces launched a ballistic missile attack on Kyiv, striking structures and causing fires in multiple city districts, Kyiv’s Mayor Vitaliy Klitschko confirmed on July 8.

According to the mayor’s official statement, a missile strike in the Desnianskyi district of the city caused a warehouse to catch fire.

He also added that there are currently two people injured in the capital, one of whom has been hospitalized.

Concurrently, another fire broke out in a non-residential building located within the Sviatoshynskyi district. Klitschko stated that the capital was being targeted by ballistic weaponry and explicitly instructed residents to remain in air defense shelters.

Russian forces have previously started using jet-powered Shahed attack drones for deep strikes inside Ukraine, because Ukrainian air defenses were successfully intercepting between 92% and 96% of conventional propeller-driven Iranian-designed Shahed drones, rendering the standard models impractical for long-range attacks.

This latest Russian attack on Kyiv came just one day after a massive missile strike that killed 20 people and injured 90 others in the capital.
