A Russian double drone strike targeted a kindergarten in the central part of Sumy, killing a female security guard and injuring two other staff members, regional officials reported on May 6.

According to Oleg Hryhorov, Head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, Russian forces attacked the civilian building with two strike UAVs, prompting an immediate rescue operation.

Hryhorov later confirmed that the body of a female security guard was discovered under the rubble of the preschool. He emphasized that children were not attending the facility at the time of the attack.

“My sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased,” Hryhorov stated.

Serhii Kryvosheienko of the Sumy City Military Administration provided further details, identifying the weapons used as “Geran-2” drones—the Russian designation for Iranian-designed Shahed UAVs. Kryvosheienko confirmed that two female workers, aged 52 and 53, were injured in the strike.

One of the victims remains hospitalized in moderate condition, while the other was examined and received inpatient medical care.

The blast wave also caused collateral damage to nearby residential buildings, shattering windows and blowing out balcony frames.

To combat the daily threat of Russian Shahed drones—such as those that struck the central Sumy preschool—Ukrainian air defenses have increasingly relied on FPV interceptor networks. According to a recent Army Media interview, specialized drone crews are achieving up to a 95% success rate using systems like the Sting interceptor, with some units destroying dozens of targets in a single day.

Operators specifically aim to detonate the Russian drones' warheads mid-air and guide them away from populated areas to prevent debris from striking civilian homes. However, despite these high interception rates, the sheer volume of Russian swarm attacks means some UAVs still bypass the defensive net.
