A Russian airstrike using three guided aerial bombs (KABs) hit the northeastern Ukrainian city of Sumy on July 11, killing at least four people, including a child, and injuring at least 17 others, according to Sumy Regional Military Administration head Oleh Hryhorov and Sumy city officials.

The strikes targeted civilian areas in the city’s Zarichnyi district, with two bombs hitting a busy public area and another striking infrastructure, local authorities said.

According to Sumy Regional Military Administration head Oleh Hryhorov, Russian forces launched three guided aerial bombs at the city during the afternoon of July 11.

Hryhorov said four people were killed in the attack, including a child, while the number of injured had risen to at least 17 as rescue operations continued. Three of the wounded remain in serious condition, and additional victims have continued to seek medical assistance.

The regional administration reported that two bombs struck a crowded area where civilians, private vehicles, and public transportation were present. One of the impacts occurred near a road and a public transport stop. A third bomb targeted a piece of civilian infrastructure that authorities said is part of the city’s critical services.

Photographs released by Hryhorov show significant damage to a passenger minibus and nearby residential buildings. Local officials said the blast waves shattered hundreds of windows and balcony frames in surrounding apartment blocks.

Hryhorov urged residents to remain in shelters and avoid the impact sites, warning of the risk of follow-up strikes. “The threat of enemy attacks remains. Stay in safe places and do not approach the strike sites due to the risk of repeated attacks,” Hryhorov said.

Local outlet Kordon.Media reported that one of the bombs exploded in the middle of a roadway, killing people waiting at a bus stop as well as the driver of a minibus. The outlet also reported that several of the hospitalized victims sustained traumatic amputations.

The attack comes hours after Russia launched another large-scale overnight assault across Ukraine using ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and more than 120 drones. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, Ukrainian defenses intercepted 111 drones but failed to shoot down any of the six ballistic missiles, which struck Kyiv and injured at least 11 people, including a child.

Ukrainian officials have repeatedly warned that the country faces a shortage of interceptor missiles capable of defeating ballistic threats. Following the overnight attack, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy again urged Ukraine’s partners to accelerate deliveries of Patriot air defense systems and interceptor missiles, as well as implement commitments made during the recent NATO Summit.
