A Russian strike on a civilian MERA QUEEN cargo vessel in the Black Sea killed a Ukrainian sailor and injured three other people, Odesa Regional Military Administration Head Oleh Kiper, reported on August 6.

According to Kiper, the attack targeted a Guinea-Bissau-flagged bulk carrier transporting Ukrainian wheat.

“The enemy continues to attack civilian vessels in the Black Sea. Unfortunately, one person was killed and three others were injured,” Kiper said.

The strike damaged the ship's hull and sparked a fire on board. The crew was evacuated to shore, while the injured are receiving medical assistance.

Kiper said the attack underscored what he described as Russia's deliberate campaign against civilian shipping and global food supplies.

“Such attacks once again demonstrate the systematic and cynical nature of Russian terror, as well as the fact that the aggressor is creating a threat both to the lives of civilians and to global food security as a whole,” he said.

The Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority condemned the strike, describing it as part of Russia's ongoing campaign against civilian maritime shipping.

“Russia's systematic attacks on civilian vessels and Ukraine's port infrastructure are further evidence of a deliberate campaign against freedom of navigation in the Black Sea,” the authority said.

A Russian strike on a Guinea-Bissau-flagged civilian cargo vessel near Odesa killed 10 people, including a Ukrainian maritime pilot, the Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority reported on July 20.

The attack occurred on July 19 shortly after the bulk carrier had completed loading a cargo of corn and was departing a Ukrainian port. On board were 17 crew members from Syria and India, along with a harbor pilot from the Delta-Pilot branch of Ukraine's state maritime enterprise.
