There Can’t Be “Win-Win in This War” After Years of Human Losses, Zelenskyy Says

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said there can no longer be a “win-win” outcome to Russia’s war against Ukraine after years of human losses, arguing that the priority should now be stopping the war and preserving lives.

Speaking in an interview with CBC News, Zelenskyy rejected the idea that an end to the war could produce an outcome equally beneficial to Ukraine and Russia. “Between us, there can be no win-win in this war. After so many human losses, it stopped being about victory for both sides on the very first day,” Zelenskyy said.

He argued that the only meaningful outcome now would be to stop the war in order to save lives rather than search for a formula in which both sides emerge as winners.

Zelenskyy’s comments followed remarks by Jared Kushner during a September 6 visit to Kyiv, where he described the US approach to international negotiations, including efforts to end Russia’s war against Ukraine, as based on a “win-win” concept.

Kushner said the US negotiating team was approaching the issue from a business perspective and looking for an outcome that could create benefits for both sides. Zelenskyy also disputed the view that Russian leader Vladimir Putin could be satisfied with gaining only additional Ukrainian territory.

“He has the largest territory in the world, and he needs some kilometers? That is why it is very strange when some partners say: he only needs this part of Ukraine, these kilometers, and that’s it,” Zelenskyy said.

According to the Ukrainian president, Putin’s objectives extend beyond individual regions or territorial concessions. Zelenskyy said Moscow ultimately seeks to bring all of Ukraine under Russian control.

Ukraine and the United States remain in regular contact over efforts to end the war, Zelenskyy said. He added that Washington had asked Kyiv not to publicly disclose details of proposals currently under discussion while the sides continue working on them.

Zelenskyy also called for stronger US sanctions aimed at reducing Russia’s ability to continue the war.

Ukraine and the US are now preparing for a meeting between Zelenskyy and US President Donald Trump in New York later in September, potentially on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
