Poland has not yet decided whether to transfer additional MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine, despite receiving a renewed request from Kyiv, Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz said.

However, according to a statement published on the website of Poland’s Ministry of National Defense on July 6, Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that the issue remains under consideration.

“This issue is not closed. We have received a request from the Ukrainian side indicating that they remain interested,” the minister said.

Kosiniak-Kamysz also revealed that Ukraine has proposed supplying Poland with drones in exchange for the Soviet-era fighter aircraft.

“They have presented their proposal to supply drones to Poland over the next two years. Therefore, the possibility of an exchange is real, but it must be an exchange rather than simply a transfer from Poland. We are being very cautious in this matter,” he said.

The remarks come just a week after Kosiniak-Kamysz announced that Poland would not transfer MiG-29 fighter jets to Ukraine because negotiations over a proposed exchange involving Ukrainian drone technology had failed to produce an agreement.

The minister said Warsaw had offered what he described as a reciprocal arrangement under which Poland would transfer MiG-29 aircraft in return for access to Ukrainian drone technology and operational know-how.

“I proposed what I believe was a very partnership-based approach. MiGs in exchange for drones. The Ukrainians initially agreed but did not fulfil the arrangement, therefore there will be no MiGs for Ukraine, because Poland has neither drones nor the capacity to use them,” Kosiniak-Kamysz said.

The renewed discussions coincide with Ukraine's broader effort to deepen defense cooperation with its allies by exporting its combat-tested drone expertise. According to The Guardian, Kyiv aims to conclude comprehensive defense agreements with at least seven NATO member states by the end of the year, expanding exports of its combat-tested drone technologies and expertise.
