UK Defense Chief Wes Streeting Visits Kyiv Ahead of Winter to Assess Military Needs

New UK Defense Secretary Wes Streeting arrived in Kyiv on his first official visit since taking office, saying he aims to better understand Ukraine's military needs ahead of winter and accelerate British defense support.

Speaking to Suspilne on August 5, Streeting said the UK is reviewing Ukraine's requests for military assistance and will provide support wherever it has the capability to do so.

“We are looking very carefully at Ukraine's needs. We are systematically working through the entire list of those needs. Where the United Kingdom has the capability to provide assistance, we will do so. And where we do not have that capability, my job is to mobilize the international community so that it steps up its efforts,” the minister said.

Streeting said he plans to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as well as his Ukrainian counterpart, acting Defense Minister Yevhen Khmara, during the visit.

According to the British defense chief, the trip is intended to ensure the UK moves quickly in delivering support and responds directly to Ukraine's priorities.

“For me, the purpose of this visit is to make sure, right at the beginning of my term in office, that we are increasing the pace, moving as quickly as possible in providing support to Ukraine, and effectively receiving direct guidance from President Zelenskyy and Minister Khmara on what they expect from me,” Streeting said.

The visit comes as Ukraine faces mounting pressure on its air defenses. On August 5, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the country received roughly three times fewer air defense missiles in the first half of 2026 than during the same period last year, despite allied countries having interceptor stockpiles available.

His remarks followed another large-scale Russian ballistic missile attack, underscoring Ukraine's growing shortage of interceptor missiles for systems such as the Patriot and the increasing strain on the country's air defense network.
