UK Defense Secretary Warns of State-Sponsored Threats to Critical Infrastructure

British Defense Secretary Wes Streeting warned on October 22 that the United Kingdom must prepare for threats of state-sponsored terrorism aimed at civilian infrastructure by hostile nations.
Speaking in an interview cited by The Guardian, Streeting emphasized that the country needs to take hybrid threats more seriously and bolster both its national resilience and defense capabilities.

The defense chief called on the public to consider how the nation would respond to non-traditional warfare, including cyber operations that could shut down business payment systems or disrupt critical supply chains.
He added that citizens must also keep natural hazards in mind, such as widespread flooding and forest fires.
"Terms like hybrid warfare and 'grey zone' threats do not accurately capture or convey to the general public what I prefer to describe as state-sponsored terrorism. So in the face of these threats, which are not hypothetical, but real, and which are emerging not somewhere far away, but increasingly right here, we must step up efforts and take both our national resilience and national defense seriously," Streeting stated, The Guardian reported.

On September 8, 2026, the United Kingdom committed £100 million ($135.1 million) to a winter air defense package for Ukraine, including Patriot missiles, interceptors, large-caliber artillery ammunition, and drones.
In addition, the UK delivered over 25,000 drones out of a planned 120,000, surpassed the milestone of one million artillery rounds provided, and co-chaired the 36th meeting of the Ukraine Defense Contact Group alongside Germany to coordinate continued military support.
