UK Hands Ukraine the Keys to Stone Cloak, Its Battlefield-Proven Drone EW Technology

The United Kingdom will transfer intellectual property rights for its Stone Cloak electronic warfare (EW) system to Ukraine, allowing the technology to be manufactured and further developed by Ukrainian industry.

According to The Independent on July 27, Ukraine will become the first country authorized to locally produce the British-developed Stone Cloak drone protection system. The announcement is expected during President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s visit to the UK, where he is scheduled to meet newly appointed British Prime Minister Andy Burnham.

Britain will grant Ukraine both a production license and intellectual property rights for the Stone Cloak electronic warfare system, enabling Ukrainian manufacturers not only to produce the equipment domestically but also to adapt and upgrade it to meet operational requirements.

“Stone Cloak is the very best of British innovation, battle-tested on the front line, and it will play a vital role in keeping both our countries safe,” Burnham said, cited by The Independent.

The British prime minister added that transferring the intellectual property would allow Ukraine to manufacture the system at scale while continuing to improve it based on battlefield experience.

Stone Cloak is a compact electronic warfare device, roughly the size of a tablet, designed to be mounted on drones. According to The Independent, the system disrupts enemy detection capabilities, making it more difficult for Russian forces to identify and track Ukrainian unmanned aircraft.

The publication reported that the UK Ministry of Defense has already supplied thousands of Stone Cloak units to Ukraine, where they are currently used to support drone operations.

According to The Independent, Britain also plans to integrate Stone Cloak into its future long-range strike systems, including weapons being developed under Project Brakestop, a British initiative to produce lower-cost cruise missiles.

President Zelenskyy is expected to become the first foreign leader received by Burnham since he took office as prime minister. During the visit, the two leaders are also scheduled to meet Ukrainian service members participating in the multinational Sea Breeze training program in the United Kingdom, focused on mine countermeasures and maritime operations in the Black Sea.

Project Brakestop was launched by the UK Ministry of Defense in late 2024 to accelerate the development of affordable long-range strike weapons. The program includes prototypes developed by MBDA UK, MGI Engineering, and Rotron Aerospace, with at least one system expected to be delivered to Ukraine before the end of 2026.

Earlier, the United Kingdom pledged €300 million in joint funding with Sweden to help provide Ukraine with 16 Saab JAS 39 Gripen E fighter jets, supporting the country’s long-term air defense modernization.
